Mark Henry Bentley was born in Manchester in 1853, he was christened at All Saints Church in Newton Heath, Manchester on 5th August of the same year. He was the son of George Bentley and Mary Ann Williamson and the paternal grandson of William Bentley and Elizabeth Thorp whose bones were buried in the churchyard at All Saints.
