Formerly of St. Williams, Norfolk County, Barbara studied Home Economics at the University of Guelph. She was an active member in her community serving as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, Past President of the Ridgetown Public School Home and School Association, Treasurer of the Ridgetown Figure Skating Club, Regent of the Ridgetown IODE Confederation Chapter, the first female chair of the Erie St. United Church Board, member of Ridge Players, and member of the Ridgetown Golf and Curling Club. An avid genealogist, she volunteered for over fifteen years at two genealogy branches in Chatham and most notably, compiled the stories of 100 British Home Children who were place in Lambton County. She was a tireless supporter of her husband, Don at the Ridgetown Agricultural College, and in his municipal and provincial political involvements.
