He was born on July 6th, 1946 to the late L.C. Bruce, Sr. and Helen Murray Bruce. He graduated from Central High School, the Tennessee Military Institute, and later enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam War with the 1st Battalion Combat Unit on Hill 881 during the Battle of Khe Sahn, as a rifle sharp shooter. After being wounded during combat, he was later awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
He continued serving his country and fellow marines as the Chaplain of the Marine Corps League in Flagler Beach, Florida. Sonny was a member of Fountain City Presbyterian Church, an avid UT Vols fan, enjoyed nature, being outdoors, and loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved and proudly served his country as a United States Marine. He is survived by daughters Shannon Bruce of Maryville and Kelly Bruce McMorrough of Newman, Georgia, grandchildren; twins Christian and Kendall McMorrough, special sister and caregiver Karen Lee; sisters Jerri Miller and Harlene Bruce, nephew Daryel Lee, Special Friends Ann Drummer Collins and Bob Rutherford.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 29th, 2017 from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Mynatt Funeral Home, Fountain City Chapel. Family and friends will be leaving the funeral home at 1:45 p.m. to travel in procession to Lynnhurst Cemetery for a 2:00 p.m. graveside service, where Mr. Bruce will receive military honors.
