Obituary: Joyce Abbott, age 91, of Indianola and formerly of Carroll passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Westview Care Center of Indianola. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 13, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Pastor Mark Norman will provide words and prayers to honor Joyce's life. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Joyce was born September 28, 1926 in Belden, Nebraska to Uri and Blanche (Walradt) Hillman. She graduated from Crofton High School in 1944. She then enrolled at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, NE for nurses training. Joyce graduated in 1947 as an RN and took employment at the hospital. Her life would change forever when she agreed to go on a blind date with a University of Nebraska GI Bill student. Joyce married Clifford E. Abbott on June 1, 1948 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Upon Cliff's graduation, they moved to Crofton, NE to work in agri-business. The couple also lived in Iowa and Colorado while raising their four children. They eventually settled in Carroll in 1969, where Joyce took employment as the first school nurse at Carroll Kuemper High School. She served the community there for 19 years. Always busy, Joyce and Cliff were Amway consultants and members of the local Methodist Church. Joyce, after being widowed in 1983, continued to attend the First United Methodist Church and was actively involved with the United Methodist Women's Organization. She retired in 1988, and enjoyed spending her time with family and friends. Because of progressing dementia she moved to Indianola in 2010. Her children's fondest memories include Joyce's always positive attitude, freshly baked bread, being surrounded by music and always ready for a game of cards or Scrabble. I Joyce is survived by her four children: Vicki Abbott, Greg Abbott (Becky), Jeff Abbott, and Shauna Malloy (Randy). She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, her parents, brothers, Leslie and Blair, a grandson, Benjamin Broberg and great grandson, Landon Marion.
