CATHERINE CAMEL HOLIDAY HEMINGWAY

The subject of this brief sketch, Catherine Camel Holiday, was born in Albany county, N. Y., on the 13th day of Aug.,1839. When a child of 10 she migrated with her parents to Wis. and 10 years later on Dec. 4, 1859, was married to Calvin Hemingway at Fond du Lac, Wis.

It was while the Civil War was still in progress that they came to Minnesota and settled in Steele county and some 42 years ago came to this vicinity and have since lived in or near the village of Kasson.

To Mr. and Mrs. Hemingway 4 children were born, 3 of whom survive the mother, viz: Mrs. F. O. Kimball, of Chicago; Elmer, of this village, & Porter G.,who resides in the old farm, southwest of town.

She is also survived by a sister and 2 brothers. The sister is Mrs. Julia Roe, of this village, and the brothers are Adam Holiday, of Kansas, and Augustus Holiday, of Oshkosh, Wis.

Mrs. Hemingway was converted in a Methodist revival meeting early in life and has since been deeply interested in religion. She led a quiet and home-loving life emulating the domestic virtues. Her health has been poor for some months and during the last sickness, which extended thru some weeks, suffered severely at times but after the pain there was a period of quiet and the end came gently and peacefully about noon, Sunday, June 22, 1913, bringing a desired respite and welcome rest.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home of the deceased, Rev. W.W. Brown officiating, and interment was made in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Relatives and friends from out of town, here to the funeral were the following:
Augustus Holiday, of Oshkosh, Wis.; A. Hemingway, H.W. Stout, Mr.& Mrs. Art Sorenson and Philura Felton, of Owatonna; Earl Stout, Frank Sheldon, Mrs. Frank Randall,Morris Lonergan and Elvyn Hemingway of Ellendale; Mr. & Mrs. C. B. Dibble, of Owatonna; Geo. Hemingway, of Waseca; F. O. Kimball and D. O. Kimball, of Chicago.

Notes from Shirley Hemingway: Catherine is the granddaughter of John P. McHarg of Bethlehem, Albany County, New York. The John P. McHarg family record booklet is at the Minnesota Historical Society. (In that booklet Catherine's name is spelled Catherine Campbell Haliday.) The booklet contains interesting oral history and some photos.
