After high school, Oscar was drafted into the U.S. Army and served several U.S. postings in World War II.
When he arrived to attend to brain-injured soldiers quartered at Avon Old Farms School, he met his future bride, Vivian Engstrom, who was serving coffee to soldiers in a cantina as they arrived at Hartford’s train station. Oscar and Vivian married on Jun 21, 1945 and began to raise their family of six children in Killingworth.
Oscar received his bachelor’s degree in education at Central Connecticut State University and his master’s at the University of Hartford.
The family lost Vivian in 1971.
Oscar went on to marry Inga Lisa Leonardson on July 6, 1974, in Killingworth. Like Vivian, Inga was Swedish. She was a single mother of three; she and Oscar settled in Litchfield and made a new life together raising their nine children.
After 30 years of teaching reading skills to elementary students, Oscar retired in 1980. He enjoyed the outdoors, chopping wood and clearing land, kayaking, frequently walking to Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, and playing with his many grandchildren.
Oscar was an avid reader of history. He served as a deacon at Litchfield Congregational Church, as well as volunteering as a literacy volunteer at the Litchfield jail.
Inga crossed over in 2016, after which, Oscar's youngest daughter came to live and care for him at home in Litchfield. He died there on Feb. 8, 2018. He was 97.
