Levi was a former County Judge. He died of "neuralgia of the heart". He was a prominent Democrat and was mayor of Hudson for two years and county judge for four years.

He was a brother of the late ex-assemblyman John B. Longley of Brooklyn.

As the Democratic candidate last year for justice of the supreme court, he was defeated by A.V.S Cochrane, Republican.
He is survived by one daughter. His wife, who was Mary D. Andrews, died in 1892.
