AMARILLO - a 13-year-old Amarillo youth drowned Friday in the west branch of Amarillo Creek. His body was recovered by rescue teams after almost three hours of searching.

Shannon Eugene Barton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Royce Barton of 112 Teresa, in Amarillo, was pronounced dead on arrival at Northwest Texas Hospital by Potter County Justice of the Peace Cliff Roberts, who acted as coroner.

The Barton youth and a friend were crossing the flooded creek on horseback, when Barton's horse apparently stepped in a hole, and young Barton was thrown from the saddle. The horse he was riding made its way to the bank, leaving the youth in the creek. He was unable to get out of the deep underwater hole.

Services are set for 11 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gerald Swaggerty, pastor of River Road Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Blackburn Shaw Funeral Home.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Storm and Julie, both of the home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Barton, of 106 Barton Road and Mrs. Dallas McLaughlin of 607 Hill, both in Amarillo.
