~William Burder Ferguson, Jr.~

William Burder Ferguson, 74, developer of a material control system at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. which became a model for shipyards throughout the world, died at 8 Thursday night (February 26, 1953) at his home in Hickory, N.C., after a short illness.

He was a brother of Homer L. Ferguson, chairman of the board of the Newport News shipyard.

Mr. Ferguson was an executive at the Newport News shipyard for several years, during and after World War I, and was active in the civic affairs of the community.

His system of material control attracted wide acclaim as a revolutionary development in that field. He wrote a textbook on that subject.

He was born in April 1878 in Waynesville, N.C., and was a graduate of the United States Military Academy.

Mr. Ferguson was also well known as a teacher in mathematics and engineering.

During World War II, he served in a high executive capacity with the Canadian government in the maritime field.

In addition to the chairman of the board of Newport News shipyard, he is survived by another brother, Gen. Harley B. Ferguson (U.S. Army-Ret.), who was head of the Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation during World War I.

In addition to his brothers, he is survived by his wife; a step daughter, Mrs. M.A. Laverty of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; and three sisters, Mrs. John C. Orr of Bristol and Florida, Mrs. Margie Blaylock of Florida, and Mrs. Eli Watson of Hickory.

Funeral services are to be held at 3 this afternoon (Saturday, February 28, 1953) in Waynesville, and burial will be there.

WAYNESVILLE-Funeral services for William Burder Ferguson, of Hickory, formerly of Waynesville, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday (February 28, 1953) in Hickory.

Graveside services will be held in the Green Hills Cemetery here at 3 p.m. Saturday (February 28, 1953) with the Rev. Edgar Goold, rector of Grace Episcopal Church, officiating.

Ferguson, son of the late W.B. and Laura Ferguson of Waynesville, died Thursday night (February 26, 1953) in Hickory after a brief illness. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Carlee Ferguson; a sister, Mrs. Will Blalock of Hickory; and a niece, Mrs. Ottis Greene Jr. of Asheville.
