William (Bill) Martin passed away on February 4, 2000 of lung cancer related to asbestos exposure at the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 19 days. He is survived by his wife, Lydia J. Phallan, ex-wife, Marlene Haas, daughter; Roycie Raspberry and husband Ronald, sons; William L. Martin, Jr., Dwayne Martin and wife Debbie, and Scott Martin and wife Ann. Brothers; Jack Martin, and Robert Sanders and wife Becky, ten grandchildren; including Robyn Nipper-Raspberry, who is also included on Findagrave. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends. My Dad had a wonderful sense of humor and he was always the life of the party and could always keep everyone laughing when he was around. He always had jokes to tell and loved making people laugh. He was a very laid-back man who never took too many things too seriously. He would meet someone for the first time and before you knew it, he would have them laughing too. My Dad and I were very close. Every week or two, until he became too sick, he would come by my house and pick me up and he and I would go to breakfast together. I miss him more than words could ever express.
My dad was a pipefitter by trade and a proud member of the Pipefitters, Local Union No.211 in Houston, Texas until his retirement. He fought his cancer off and on for many years. It would appear, he would go through treatment, and be well for several years before it would return again and he would start the fight all over again. He fought it until he lost the strength to fight it any longer and decided to discontinue treatment. One of the hardest things in my life was to watch this wonderful, funny man, so full of life, slowly decline. He kept his wonderful sense of humor until he lapsed into a coma and passed away. The world is a much sadder place without him.
