Audrey was born Ottilie Lieberknecht, but she preferred to use the name Audrey. She worked all her life as a legal secretary having attended Santa Barbara Business College at age 16 rather than complete Santa Barbara High School in 1924. She was captain of the girls' basketball team in high school and played tennis. She first worked at Standard Oil Company where she met Philip G. Jones. They married in 1930 and moved into the house she inherited from her mother's friend who worked at the newspaper. They divorced in 1949. She married Homer O. Golden in 1953. Audrey raised two daughters in Santa Barbara, California.
