Hoff, Ellen Marie1929-2018Ellen Marie Hoff, 89, Mutual 11, passed away in her sleep on Feb. 26, 2018, at Heritage Hills Memory Care in Oceanside, California.Born Feb. 14, 1929, in Flint, Michigan, she was the sixth and youngest child of Bob and Zora Young, who had gone to Michigan for work at the start of the Depression. Within the next year, the family had moved back to the Lake City, Arkansas, area where she grew up, attending Bay High School in Bay, Arkansas. She then attended McKinley High School in St. Louis, Missouri, when she and her parents moved there to be near her brother Hillard after WWII.It was in St. Louis that Marie met the love of her life, Bob Hoff, and married him in 1951 at Hillard's home. They would follow her sister Virginia to Southern California in 1953, settling in Downey and ultimately living in Bellflower for 35 years. She was a hairdresser at Rosewood Beauty Salon for many years, and in later years ran the beauty shop at Country Villa Nursing Home in Downey.Bob and Marie retired to Leisure World, Seal Beach, in 1995, where they lived for 22 years.Marie was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and was very proud of her cousin, L.O. Sanderson, who was a minister, music editor of the Gospel Advocate for 50 years and a prolific hymn writer. Also in her family tree were a number of preachers of the gospel, as they were called back then.She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, who passed away two months ago, as well as her parents; and siblings, Leah Virginia Veenstra, Larmon Oxford Young, Hillard Pershing Young, Robbie Lee Lewis and Elden Wayne Young.She is survived by her children, Robin (John) Kaspar of Short Pump, Virginia; Marc Hoff of Carlsbad, and Dana Hoff of Long Beach; grandchildren, Brian (Erika Jimenez) Kaspar of Irvine, Erin (Kevin) Terry of Panama City, Florida and Brittany (Andrew Perez) Hoff of Anaheim; two great-grandchildren, Anastasia "Anya" and Landon Terry; and numerous nieces and nephews.Visitation will be held at Chapel of Memories, 12626 Woods Avenue, Norwalk, California 90650 on Thursday, March 8 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Services will be on Friday, March 9, at 1 p.m. at Chapel of Memories.
