When Jim was a child the family migrated to Henry County Missouri between 1850 and 1860. He was a member of Company E, Nichol's regiment, Jackman's Brigade Missouri Cavalry CSA. His older brother, Martin Webster, was a Union soldier. Jim's last years were spent in the Confederate Home in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
