Notorious criminal Campbell's crimes according to Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections records, were three counts of armed robbery, one of grand larceny, and one of shooting with the intent to kill a state trooper. All of the charges originated in three different counties. He was sentenced to an unspecified amount of prison time in June 1968, aged 20. He was convicted of the murder of a barkeeper days after being released from the 1968 convictions in the course of a robbery in November 1972.

After the attempted robbery of Sully's Market weeks after Campbell's release in 1997 he was shot by the store' clerk. On April 2, 1997, Campbell, feigning paralysis and thus in a wheelchair, was transported to court for the aggravated robbery charge. Upon arrival, he overpowered the sole deputy responsible for transporting him, stealing Deputy Sheriff Teresa Harrison's gun, and fled the from the courthouse loading dock. Campbell then carjacked 18-year-old Charles Dials who was at court paying a traffic ticket for a headlight violation, forcing him to drive for three hours. according to his confession. A radio news report on Campbell’s escape mentioned that he had commandeered a red truck. Dials said, “That’s you, ain’t
it?” Campbell admitted it was, and they talked a while longer. Campbell then ordered Charles Dials to get down on the floor board of the truck where he was shot and killed.

Campbell was sent to Ohio's death chamber on November 15, 2015. Gravely ill the execution was called off after four unsuccessful attempts to find a vein, Ohio called off the execution. A new execution date was set for June 5, 2019 which many correctly predicted Campbell would never live to see.
