Annabel Ogan Nickell, 94, of Springfield, IL passed away peacefully on March 2, 2018.

Ann was born Easter Sunday, April 1, 1923 in Danville, IL, the daughter of Lillian Lee and Earl Allen Ogan. She married Thomas Nickell on August 6, 1950 at the First Presbyterian Church in Danville, IL.

Ann met Tom at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL, where she graduated in 1945 with degrees in Spanish and English. She became a teacher at Oak Hill School in Danville before giving birth to Randy in 1955. Ann and Tom were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield for 30 years and more recently Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield. Ann enjoyed and became involved in acrylic and watercolor painting during the 1970s. Her love for art continued throughout her life and now many of her works hang in the homes of her beloved friends and family.

Ann had been living at Concordia Village in Springfield since just after her husband’s death in 2009. During her time there, she was always happiest in the garden admiring the flowers and when she was sitting with a puppy in her lap. Ann always had a fond love for animals, especially dogs. She even enjoyed grooming dogs for friends as a hobby. Being active was always very important to Ann and she continued to be involved with PEO, Springfield Garden Club, Prairie Art Alliance, Daughters of the American Revolution, Springfield Art Association, and the Sangamon Watercolor Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Thomas Andrew Nickell in 2009, as well as her son, Randall Lee Nickell in 2015.

She is survived by two grandsons, David (wife, Katharine) Nickell and Christopher (wife, Kaitlyn) Nickell; and her beloved cousin, Dotty Hiatt.
