James P. Burrell was bornin Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1790 to Dr. Jean (John) Baptiste Elzeard Burel and Patience Hannah Bird. His father was a French immigrant and his mother was an Acadian. His family moved to Union, Union County, South Carolina in the 1800s. He married Nancy Elizabeth Darby about 1815, and they sailed from South Carolina to New Orleans. Then they came to Attala County, Mississippi via Natchez. They had 6 children: Mary, William Riley, John Berry, Anne Elizabeth, Isabella Avilla, and James Henry. James P. served for the Confederate States of America, in the 40th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Company C, "Attala Rebels". He was killed in action during the seige of Vicksburg, on June 9, 1863.James Peter Burrell was born about 1790 in Germantown of a French father and a Canadian mother from Nova Scotia.

His father was Jean Baptiste Elzeard Burel, born 26 Nov 1757 in Ollioules, Var, Provence (now the Department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), France, died Mar 1828 in Goshen Hill, Union County, South Carolina. Peter's mother was Patience Hanna Bird, born unknown date in Nova Scotia, Canada, and died about 1848 in Goshen Hill.

About 1815, Peter married Nancy Elizabeth Darby in Union County, South Carolina. Nancy was born about 1790 in South Carolina and died about 1878 in Attala County, Mississippi.

Peter died in Attala County, Mississippi, but his burial place has not been located. His son, named James Henry, died in the battle of Vicksburg, and was buried there in 1863. Some have confused John Henry, who was born in 1832, with his father, James Peter.
