Calvin William Henry

Calvin William Henry was born June 16, 1827, in Cambria, Niagara Co., New York, the first son and second child of five children born to Hulda Minerva Murray and James Henry of Rhode Island.

His brothers and sisters are listed as Cyrena Ann, Philenon Rawston, Merrill and Thomas. He also had an older brother and an older half sister named Charles and Celinde, from his father's first marriage to Phebe Speirs.

Calvin moved with his family when he was four years old in 1831 to Pontiac, Michigan. Calvin married Priscilla Barnum on February 23, 1851. Calvin was 24 years old and Priscilla was seventeen years. Priscilla and Calvin had two children: James Barnum Henry and Lauretta Maria Henry. At some point they divorced. Lauretta stayed with her mother and James Barnum went with his father.

On September 13, 1862 Calvin married Agnes Taylor of Scotland. Agnes was a kind-hearted woman. She was ten years younger than Calvin and was now tested in the rigors of pioneer life. Agnes and Calvin had several children borne to them. Calvin's former wife, Rhoda Priscilla died in 1866 so daughter Lauretta Maria came to live with her father, Calvin and Agnes. This was an adjustment for Lauretta.

Her father and brothers were as strangers and their customs were new to her. Her father was a quick spoken man, and being unaccustomed to his mannerisms, Lauretta was more often than not lonely, unhappy and heartsick during those first years. However, Lauretta had learned many pioneer skills in her mothers home and was able to be a great help to Agnes. Agnes seemed to understand the needs of Lauretta and they became close.

Calvin died Novenber 22, 1908. He was 81 years of age, having been a frontiersman and pioneer most of his life, and having contributed substantially to the development of the many areas he helped to colonize. He had been in poor health for at least five years prior to his death.
