James enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served in the Phillipines during WWII. After an honorable discharge he returned to Greeley, attended Colorado State College of Education (now UNC), and graduated with a degree in business in 1950. Following graduation he was employed by Peter Kiewit as a field accountant and moved to the Jackson Hole country in Wyoming. Two years later he became a partner with his father and together they operated Adams Pharmacy in Greeley. In 1967 Jim returned to college to obtain his teaching credentials and taught business at Aims Community College until his retirement in 1991.
