Born on April 2, 1930 in Washington Twp, Carroll County, she was the daughter to the late Thaddeus and Edna Cleo (Horn) Hinkle. On November 23, 1979 in Cleveland, OH she married Edward Joseph Smith Jr. who preceded in death on July 1, 2013.
After graduating from Deer Creek High School in 1948, Mary worked for the Pharos Tribune and Joe Herd Insurance Agency while living in Logansport. She held various accounting positions, including the Chief of Accounting for the Cleveland DCASR and DAFS, and many positions at Wright-Patterson AFB. Mary retired from the Defense Agency in March of 1993 after 34 years of service.
In her spare time, along with her husband Edward, Mary loved to dance. They won many ballroom dancing competitions together. She also found it very important to give back as she volunteered and served at many senior centers.
Surviving are two sisters, Maxine Young, Winamac; Nancy (Tom) Mathew, Monticello; one brother, John E. Hinkle, Star City; niece, Patricia (Everette) Russ, Fayetteville, NC; nephews, Jeffrey Young; Michael Young, both of Winamac; Scott Hinkle, Star City.
She was preceded in death by a sister in law, Betty Hinkle and a brother in law, Robert Young.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, March 19, 2018 in the Rock Creek Cemetery, across from the Faith Lutheran Church, 6765 E. 800 N. Logansport, IN 46947.
