Maiden Name: Halbach. First Married Surname: Ellis. Alternate Spellings of Second Married Surname: Drum, Rummeler.

A daughter of John F. Halbach (1794-1868), a native of Germany, and Pennsylvania native Susanna (Reese) Halbach (1800-1859), Paulina was born in Philadelphia on 22 March 1839, according to her Pennsylvania death certificate. Alternate spellings of the family's surname appear in various records as "Halbeck", “Hallbach," and "Hallback."
She was more commonly known as "Pauline."

By 1840, at the age of one, Pauline Halbach was residing in Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania with her parents and older brothers: Charles John Halbach (1827-1913) and Albert Halbach (1834-1856). A sister, Josephine Matilda Halbach (1841-1937), who was born on 18 October 1841, would later go on to wed John Wolfgang Strobel.

By 1850, the Halbach children were living with their parents in East Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Their father was a Justice of the Peace at this time. It was also during this phase of her life that she met her future husband, William Ellis. A young miner and resident of Allentown who was a son of John and Mary Ann Ellis, he had been born in Ireland in 1829 in the town of Mayfield, which is now part of the north side of Cork city in the province of Munster in Ireland’s South-West Region. Based on the history of that region, he had most likely emigrated to America in the midst of or just after The Great Famine which plagued his homeland from 1845-1850.

They were united in marriage at the German Reformed Church in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County on 15 November 1853. Their first child, daughter Sarah Matilda Ellis, was born in Lehigh County just two years later, on 2 September 1855, followed by daughter Susanna Isabella (1857-1932), who arrived in Catasauqua, Lehigh County on 15 February 1857, and was then baptized that same year at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Susanna would be known throughout much of her life as "Susan."

Son Peter Ellis was then born sometime around 1859.

In 1860, as Pauline and her husband made ends meet on his wages as a day laborer, they resided with their three children in Allentown’s First Ward. Their little boy, Peter, however, was not long for the world; legal paperwork filed several years later by Pauline Ellis stated that, in 1864, she was the mother of just two children – daughters Sarah Matilda and Susanna Isabella Ellis.)

By the Summer of 1861, family patriarch William Ellis had joined the fight to preserve the Union of his adopted homeland as a Private with Company I, 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Sadly, he became the first member of the 47th Pennsylvania to die while the regiment was stationed in South Carolina, succumbing to congestive fever at the Union Army's General Hospital on 1 August 1862. (U.S. Civil War Widow's Pension records later indicated that the fever may have been the result of cholera.)

Forced to choose between trying to raise two young children on the poverty income she was receiving as the widow of a U.S. Civil War soldier or a more hopeful future, Pauline (Halbach) Ellis quickly chose the most practical option available to her for ensuring a better life for herself and her daughters – remarriage. On 29 November 1863, she became the wife of Daniel Rummeler (alternate spelling: "Drum") during a wedding ceremony officiated by the Rev. Joseph Keilan at the Catholic Church in East Allentown.

Appointed as the guardian of her own children, she was then awarded U.S. Civil War Orphans' Pension funds to help care for her children; these funds were made payable to "Pauline E. Drum." At some point, U.S. Civil War Pension records were updated to reflect the spelling of her second married surname as "Rummeler."

In 1891, she became a widow for the second time when her second husband, Daniel, Rummeler (aka "Drum") passed away.

Death and Interment

Suffering from heart disease and aging-related dementia, Paulina (Halbach) Ellis Rummeler passed away at 7 p.m. at the Philadelphia General Hospital on 18 May 1919. Her daughter, Susan (Ellis) Classen, served as the informant on her death certificate.

She was laid to rest at the Oakland Cemetery in Philadelphia on 23 May 1919. William H. Eppley handled her funeral arrangements.

Her daughter, Susan, grew up to begin her own family. After initially marrying Charles Krauss, she was then married a second time – in 1890 t0 Isaac Claassen (1868-1940). After a long, full life, Susanna Isabella (Ellis) Kraus Claassen passed away on 29 June 1932, and was laid to rest at the same cemetery where her mother had been interred –
