SFC (Ret) Clifford G. Barnes, Sr. March 03, 1927- December 10, 2015 Columbus, Georgia-
SFC (Ret) Clifford G. Barnes, Sr. age 88, resident of Columbus, Georgia, died on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Thursday, December 17, 2015, 2 p.m. with Reverend Jay Bailey officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. SFC Barnes, son of the late James Benjamin Barnes and Sarah Elizabeth Dickey Barnes, was born March 23, 1927 in Montgomery, Alabama. He was retired from the U.S. Army , where he served his country honorably for over 26 years. SFC Barnes served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam and was awarded several medals and ribbons for his exemplary service to include the Bronze Star Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Korean Service Medal w/one Silver Star; Vietnam Service Medal w/three Bronze Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device; and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. After retiring from the military, he then worked at Southern Foods. SFC Barnes was Methodist by faith and a member of the Columbus Cottonmouths Booster Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Barnes and two brothers, James Barnes and George Barnes. SFC Barnes is survived by one daughter, Sara Elizabeth "Libby" Cochran and her husband Michael of Opelika, Alabama; three sons, Johnny Barnes and his wife Anita of Columbus, Clifford G. Barnes, Jr. and his wife Jean of Manor, Texas, and Wayne Barnes of Columbus; two sisters, Doris Browder of Prattville, Alabama and Margaret Morgan of Montgomery, Alabama; one brother, Tom Barnes of Columbus; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
