Obituary: One of Muscatine's early settlers and a long time and highly respected resident of South Muscatine, died at 9:40 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 1200 Hershey avenue, when Jacob Balmos calmly expired. He had attained the allotted period of three score and 10 years and had enjoyed comparatively good health up to January 13th, when he received injuries which resulted in his death yesterday morning. Mr. Balmos was born in Graben, near Rohrbach Canton Bern, Switzerland on January 25th, 1835, consequently attaining the age of 74 years, 2 months and 28 days. Together with his parents, he came to this country in 1852 and on September 7th, 1858, he united in marriage with Martha Hofman, at Port Jervis, New York, and almost immediately came to this vicinity where he had made his home ever since. Ten years ago yesterday he moved to this city from near Fruitland, and resided in South Muscatine up to the time of his death. Through his long and useful career, that which he spent in this vicinity, he was highly respected by all who knew him and was regarded by all as an honorable citizen. Almost through the entire period of his life, he followed the peaceful pursuits of agriculture. It will be remembered that Mr. Balmos, together with a number of relatives and friends, celebrated his golden anniversary on September 7th, 1908. Mr. Balmos had been a member of the German Evangelical church for 50 years and throughout that period he had been an earnest worker for Christ. Those surviving besides his widow are one daughter, Mrs. Henry Schaefer and two sons, John of Fruitland, and Jacob of Atalissa. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet.
