John Lathrop came to Jacksonville in November of 1836.
Married Elizabeth Clarissa Kibbe on August 1, 1839 in Somers, Tolland, Conn.
For more than 30 years, he was one of the leading dry goods merchants of Jacksonville. In 1885, he went into the insurance business with his son-in-law, Charles H. Ward.
Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clara Branson in Ottawa, Kansas.
Survived by four children: John Kibbe Lathrop of Springfield, Mass., Edward Billings Lathrop of Chicago, IL, Mrs. Clara Louise Branson of Ottawa, Kansas (wife of Henry C. Branson), and Mrs. Jullia Emma Ward, wife of Charles H. Ward of Jacksonville, IL; and three sisters: Mrs. Mary Mosley of Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Caroline Post of Fort Worth, TX, and Mrs. Emeline Wickham of Springfield.
Preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Gordon Lathrop died in infancy and Wm. Lathrop; and four sisters: Mrs. Julia Dwyer of New York City, Miss Sarah Lathrop of Hartford, Conn., Miss Eliza Lathrop of Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Maria Smith of Joy Prairie (IL),.
His remains were brought back to Jacksonville. Services were held at the residence of Charles H. Ward. Burial in Diamond Grove.
