Son of the late May Hannah (Weir) and George Winfred Reed. He was also preceded in death by his two siblings, Mrs. Alice Gertrude Smith and Ralph F. Reed.

His mother died in 1907 while he was only several months old. Soon after, he was taken to Compton, Quebec, Canada to be raised by his mother's sister and brother-in-law, Alice Catherine (Weir) Lebourveau and Alvin Moses Lebourveau. When Howard's father died in 1910, Howard's two older siblings, Alice and Ralph, were taken in and raised by their father's brother and sister-in-law, William Livingston and Gertrude (Burroughs) Reed in Concord, VT.

Eventually, Howard returned to the Lamoille County area of Vermont and married Hattie Mabel (Whitcomb) of Hyde Park, VT on Jan. 18, 1930 in Morrisville, Vermont. They divorced in 1947. Two children were born from this union: Elizabeth Alice and Howard John.

Howard's second marriage was to the widow, Margaret (LePage) Joanis, who survived him until her death on Sept. 20, 1989. Margaret had 3 children from her first marriage: Earnest, Dorothy and Barbara. No children from this second marriage.

Howard was employed by Jenkins Motors (of greater Hartford, CT area), first as truck driver, later as dispatcher before retiring. Howard and Margaret had lived in East Hartford, CT for several years before retiring to Port Charlotte, FL.
