Survivors include her daughters, Shirley Calhoun (Phil) of Kansas, IL and Carolyn Whalin of Martinsville, IL; brother, Victor Maxey (Sandy) of Casey, IL; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; daughters, Marilyn Grant and Flora Leonard; son in law, Robert Whalin; brothers, George and Leroy (Bud) Maxey; sisters, Lola Updegraff and Naoma Bradford and great great grandson, Nolan Leonard.
Esther was a faithful member of Willis Chapel Church of God and Ladies Aid of Martinsville. She was known as a devout “Prayer Warrior” throughout her life. For many years she waitressed at John and Artie Bushart Restaurant in Westfield and Staley’s “Old Homestead” Restaurant in Casey. Esther was a devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren which she called her little “dollies.” Esther was an avid baker and quilt maker. She never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone. She had a contagious smile that would brighten anyone’s day. She was loved dearly and will be greatly missed.
Services celebrating her life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Markwell Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Mattoon, IL. Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. on Monday evening at Markwell Funeral Home, 200 N. Central Ave., Casey, IL.
