John Bate Bryson (aka JB as an adult and Bates as a child) was born in Middle Musquodobit, Nova Scotia where his family had farmed for several generations since the immigration of his grandparents Adam and Jane (stewart) Bryson from Ballymena, Northern Ireland in 1825. JB and three of his brothers along with his youngest sister Ida Mary and his widowed mother emigrated to British Columbia prior to the completion of the national railway. they settled in New Westminster where JB married his first wife, Mary Etta Currie and had his first child, Constance Bates (Bryson) Boyle. JB moved to the Interior of BC after his wife's tragic death at the age of 27. He worked as a blacksmith on the Cariboo Highway, showing horses for the gold trail. Then he moved to the Grange Ranch near Pavilion BC and married Minnie Carson, daughter of pioneer ranchers Robert and Eliza Jane (Magee) Carson. JB had six more children, and many grandchildren. He is buried in the Carson Bryson Family Cemetery on top of Pavilion Mountain.
