On February 28, 1956, Thomas took prospective buyer, 27 year old Robert Lee Hopkins, for a test drive in a used automobile. Just off Route 60, Robert began to beat Thomas in the head with a lug wrench, then stripped him and threw him out into the elements.
Robert Hopkins was executed for the crime on September 7, 1956.
