Harry Payne Whitney, a yachtsman and former businessman, died Sept. 18 after heart surgery at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Me. He was 60 years old.Mr. Whitney maintained a home in Manhattan, but lived much of the last 10 years on his boat in ports in Long Island, Maine and North Carolina. He was the son of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney and stepson of W. Averell Harriman. He served with the Navy Seabees in World War II. He graduated from Yale University in 1950 and received a master's degree in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953. His marriage to Alexandra Ewing Whitney of Manhattan ended in divorce.
