Captain Cecil Stephen Bignold Martin, 90th Punjabis, Indian Army. He was the son of Stephen Joseph Martin and Margaret Martin of Chittagong. Born in Belgaum (Belagavi), India. Baptised on 1 Feb 1884 in Cawnpore, Bengal (Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh), India. Husband of Maud Edith Martin of 65, Goldington Avenue, Bedford. He was educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey (1898-1902). Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the South Lancashire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant on 28 Nov 1903. He transferred to the Indian Army on promotion to Lieutenant on 21 Jan 1906. Promoted to Captain on 28 Nov 1912. The battalion was stationed in Nasirabad (Rajastham, India) when WW1 started. They were mobilised and sent to Mesopotamia with the Indian Expeditionary Force. They were at the capture of Basra and were present at the Battle of Sheikh Sa'ad (6-8 Jan 1916), the Battle of the Wadi (13 Jan 1916), the Battle of Hanna (21 Jan 1915) and the Battle of Dujaila Redoubt (8 Mar 1916), failed attempts to break through to the beseiged British garrison at Kut. Captain Martin was wounded in action on 7 Feb 1916. He died in hospital in Bombay on 2 Mar 1916 from the wounds he received in action in Mesopoptamia. He was initially buried in Bombay (Sewri) Cemetery. His remains along with other military graves were exhumed and reinterred in a mass grave in front of the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial, Khadki, Maharashtra, India in 1962. His name was added to the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial.

He is also commemorated on the Elizabeth College WW1 Memorial Board in Elizabeth College, La Grange, Guernsey (see: http://www.greatwarci.net/memorials/guernsey/other/ec-roh.htm) and on the Indian Army WW1 Memorial in the Royal Memorial Chapel, RMA Sandhurst, Camberley, Surrey Heath Borough, Surrey, England.
