Carl Martin Burton, 75, died Saturday, September 27, 2014, surrounded by his loving family, after an extended illness. Born in Surry County, VA, Carl was the son of the late Garland C., Sr. and Minnie Hill Burton. He had lived in Isle of Wight County most of his life.

A veteran of the US Air Force, Carl served active duty and in the Air Force Reserves for a total of 24 years of service. He retired as a planner/estimator for Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Carl was a member of the American Legion, post #49, the Wakefield Masonic Lodge, and Dendron United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, Carl is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Garland C. Burton, Jr., and James Hill Burton, Sr. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 47 years, Shirley Warren Burton, and his daughter, Donna Sue Burton; four sisters, Norma B. Crocker, Alice B. Morgan, Judith B. Applegate, and Virginia B. Galdos; and a brother, Richard L. Burton, Sr.

Family and friends will gather 6:00 – 7:30 pm, Monday, September 29, in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield. A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, September 30, 2014 in St. Luke Memorial Park, with Rev. Michael Frank officiating. Military honors will be observed.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Isle of Wight Rescue Squad, PO Box 97, Smithfield, 23431 or to Bethany UMC, Building Fund, c/o Raymond Edwards, 13088 Mill Swamp Rd, Smithfield, VA 23430
