Ernie was born March 17, 1938 in Albany, N.Y. son of the late Alfred and Evelyn (Armstrong) Baker.
After graduating from high school, Ernie decided to go to college, but became discouraged with the course of studies laid out before him. So, Ernie decided to head west and teach himself what life had to offer. He decided to become a land surveyor, did on-the-job training and worked his way up the ladder to become a certified professional land surveyor. One of the main jobs he did while working his way up the ladder was to help survey the lands where the International Highway System was to end up throughout the entire lower 48 states. He was certified in New York and Pennsylvania. Ernie was a member of the Berrytown Wesleyan Church and was an avid reader of science fiction, loved history, traveling, walking and nature. He was also known for his love of a good practical joke, a good cigar and his turkey feather hat.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine I. (Szarek) Baker of Southport, N.Y.; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Heidi Baker of Ridgebury, PA; his four grandchildren, Christina (Dunkerley) Dawson, Jonathan, Gabriel and Sarah Baker; brother-in-law, Jimmy Szarek of Elmira and many friends.
Ernie was predeceased by his first wife, Thelma Baker, and his daughter, Michelle "Shelly" Dunkerley.
Following Ernie's wishes, there are no calling hours and a graveside service will be held when weather permits in Bentley Creek Cemetery, Ridgebury Township, PA.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts Funeral Home, Inc. 279 Main Street, Wellsburg, NY 14894.
Memorials in Ernie's memory may be made to the Berrytown Wesleyan Church, 178 Burt Road, Gillett, PA 16925. Send online condolences to robertsfhinc.com.
