The son of John & Eliza Dyer, in 1850 he was a saddler living with and/or working for Michael Hambright in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but in 1860 was a clerk living with his family in Manheim, Lancaster County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. C, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.

He married Susanna Kuhns November 2, 1865, and fathered John K. (b. @1867). In 1870, he was living with his family in Bellefontaine, Logan County, Ohio, but by 1880 they were back in Manheim where he became a member of Heintzelman Post No. 300, G.A.R.
