Thomas Leroy Kinney, age 90, passed away peacefully April 6, 2018, in Minneapolis, MN from natural causes.
He was born March 28, 1928, in Detroit to Harry Engert Kinney Sr. and Gretchen Schermerhorn Kinney.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Harry Engert Kinney Jr., and ex-wives Nancy Gallery Kinney and Marjory Shirley Kinney.

Tom attended Royal Oak High School where he sang in the school choir and played football before spending two years at Deep Springs College in California. He finished his undergraduate education at Swarthmore College, then was drafted into the Army in 1951, where he was an instructor in biological/chemical warfare. During his service he witnessed a nuclear test from a distance of 10 miles.
After his discharge from the Army, Tom earned his Master's and Ph.D. in English at the University of Michigan. He joined Bowling Green State University in 1959 to begin a career that lasted 32 years, including one year teaching English in China. Tom retired from BGSU in 1993.
Tom was well known for teaching classes on Shakespeare, Chaucer, and the legend of King Arthur. During his career he held many academic and administrative positions including acting chair of the English Department and Faculty Senate chair.
He loved to travel, canoe, sing in his church choir, play golf, read mysteries and socialize with his friends. He enjoyed jokes, good or bad, and didn't hesitate to share them with anyone who would listen. He performed in several university/community musical theater productions, including lead roles in "Three Penny Opera," "Fiddler on the Roof," and "Hello, Dolly!".
Tom cared deeply about social justice both in the United States and around the world. He had a long, productive life and will be missed by all who knew him.
