ROY LELAND

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Memorial services for Roy F. Leland were conducted Thursday, Feb. 12, at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas.

Leland, 93, died Feb. 10 in Las Vegas.

He was born Aug. 7, 1893, in Schiassee, Mich.

Leland was involved with automobiles throughout his life.

He volunteered for World War I but was kept home to teach soldiers how to be mechanics, and in some cases how to drive. Although self-educated, he eventually taught auto engineering at the University of Michigan.

Leland moved to Las Vegas in the 1930s and worked for Cashman Cadillac. He also worked at the Henderson magnesium plants during World War II, and as a railroad fireman and engineer, before returning to Cashman and staying there until retiring at 80.

He built the popular Desert Love Buggy.

Leland was a member of Royal Neighbors of America, Union Pacific Old Timers Association, Union Pacific Railroad Engineers, First United Methodist Church and Retired Senior Citizens Volunteer Program.

He was also a senior member of the Clark County Gem Collectors Inc. and the Las Vegas Cactus and Succulent Society.

He is survived by his wife, Elma Ann of Las Vegas, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
