Rev. Charles Wesley Lewis, 89, of Conway, died Sunday May 9th, 2004. He was born in Ft. Smith, Arkansas on August 28, 1914 son of the late Henry Meriwether and Minnie Belle Grimmer Lewis. Rev. Lewis attended Lyon College in Batesville, graduated from Hendrix in 1942, and was a graduate of the Perkins School of Theology at SMU in 1952. During the years after graduation from Hendrix he taught school at Dyess Colony, Mississippi County, Arkansas until the beginning of his ministry. He served numerous churches and communities in Arkansas as well as four churches in Texas during his enrollment at SMU. He ended his ministerial career here in Conway serving as the Minister of Visitation at the 1st United Methodist Church from 1968 until his retirement in 1985. He belonged to many school related association but most notably was being a member of the Alumni Associations at Lyons College, Hendrix, and the Perkins School of Theology at SMU. He was a lifetime Rotarian, served on the Board of Hospitals and Homes through the Methodist Conference, and was a member of the Seminary Singers.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years: Hermea Sue Parsons Lewis, by a daughter: Carolyn Hightower of Conway, by a granddaughter: Jamie Burton of Conway, by two great-grandchildren: Erik and Ryan Taylor of Conway, by two sisters: Pearl Buzbee of Tumbling Shoals, Arkansas, and Betty Brents of Cleveland, Arkansas. He is predeceased by three sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held Thursday 2:00 pm May 13, 2004 at the 1st United Methodist Church of Conway, officiated by Rev. Aubrietta Jones. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Holland, Arkansas. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Roller McNutt Funeral Home.
