Don was born in Nebraska and raised a Cornhusker. Don joined the Navy in 1942 and served his country proudly aboard the USS Yorktown CV-10 during WWII. He was awarded numerous medals including the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for very heroic act that is credited for saving the ship. Don settled in San Diego and married Ann Clark of Minnesota who preceded him in death in 1982. Don loved the ocean and together, he and Ann enjoyed many years of camping, scuba-diving and traveling throughout Baja California. Don achieved great success as a Dental Salesman. He distinguished himself repeatedly earning awards as the number one sales representative. After his retirement in 1992, Don kept very busy as he was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He was always the first in the field for the terrific Dove, Quail and Pheasant hunts in Mexico. He embarked on many deep sea fishing expeditions and was the jackpot winner on numerous trips. His steady golf stroke earned him a "hole in one" twice. One of these came on his birthday. Don is survived by his five children: Doug (Cathy) Aitkenhead of Broken Arrow, Okla., Bonnie (Brad) Sura of Spring, Texas, Jeanne (Paul) Evans of Alpine, Calif., Janet (Carlos) Gomez of Chula Vista, Calif., and Karen (Phil) Lievsay of Battle Ground, Wash. Don will also be missed by his eleven grandchildren: Anthony Estrada, Ashley and Donnie Gomez; Stephanie and Becky Evans; Stephanie, Jamie and Annie Sura; Erin, Faith and Colin Mayner. He also leaves a sister, Beverly Sullivan, of Blair, Nebraska. Don was respected by all who knew him. The phrase "He would give you the shirt off his back" was truly a description of Don's character. His quick wit and sense of humor made him a joy to be around. His family, hunting buddies, members of the Chula Vista Men's Golf Club, and all who had the privilege to be his friend will miss him dearly. A celebration of Don's life will be held Sept. 18, 2004 at the home of Paul and Jeanne Evans in Alpine, 12pm. For further details contact Jeanne Evans at [email protected].
