James was the son of William Jasper Compton and Mary Pigg. He married Rosetia Vanhoose.

Jim H. Compton, well-known blacksmith, died Monday at his home here. Son of Hiram [error - should be William Jasper] and Mary Compton. He was a blacksmith since the age of 15 and moved to Louisa from Lick Creek 18 years ago. Born and raised in Lawrence Co., KY, he married Rosa Van Hoose 44 years ago. Sons Leonard, Ross, Tanner, Chester and Leon. Curtright Funeral Home.
