Violet Cushman was born on 18 December 1891 in St Louis, Missouri. She was the only child of anthropologist Edwin Charles Cushman Jr and his wife, Alice Clara Muller. She attended Misses Master's School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. According to school records, she was 67 7/10 inches tall and weighed 129.5 lbs at age sixteen. Violet became engaged to Dave Hennen Coddington on 17 March 1909; they were married on 24 November 1909, when she was seventeen years old, at the Church of Transfiguration in New York City. Dave and Violet resided at 106 East 86th Street. Their twin sons were William and Dave Hennen Coddington Jr. Violet Cushman Coddington died of strep throat, 12 October 1922, aged 31, in Paris, France, and was buried at Reynolds Cemetery in Westchester County, New York.
