Alpheus T. Blackman, a Civil War Veteran, died March 5, 1916, in Sioux City, Iowa. He was born Feb. 28, 1844 in the State of Vermont.

He is buried in the Ida Grove (Iowa) Cemetery in the family lot beside his wife, Louise Grube Blackman. His wife died 4 years ago (1842-1912), and he lived the last three years in Sioux City, Iowa.

On Jan. 20, 1916, he was taken to the St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, where he was operated on for bladder trouble and double hernia. It seemed his splendid physique would pull him through. He began growing weaker about two weeks ago and died Sunday morning at 10:45 a.m.

When the Civil War started, he enlisted in Co. L, 119th Indiana Infantry in Wabash County, serving until the war was over when he held the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

He married Louise Grube March 31, 1863. Some years after the close of the War, Mr. Blackman came to Iowa. He operated a store at Waukee (near Des Moines, Ia.) before coming to Ida Grove in 1882. He conducted a general merchandise business until 1894. Then he moved to Early, Iowa, where he engaged in the same business. In 1904, he returned to Ida Grove and resumed his former business here.

Alpheus and Louise had 4 children, Charles R. (1864-1901), Dudley Warren (born 1866), Skyler Colfax (born 1870), and Harry Scott (born 1875).

Survivors include two brothers and one sister.

The funeral took place at the Dudley Blackman house. Mr. Blackman was a Mason and a Knight Templer, and the various Masonic orders, participating in the services. He was also a Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) member.

P.S. note: Dudley d. 1931, Skyler d. 1938, Harry d. 1942.
