Conrad A. Matson died Friday, April 27, 2018, in Portland, Maine.

He was born August 13, 1924, the son of the late Albert and H. Merle Matson. He grew up in Portland, attended local schools, and graduated from Portland High School in 1942. A veteran of World War II, he served in England in the Army Air Corps as a radar mechanic and returned to the States in 1945 where he was honorably discharged. In 1946 he married Ruth L Gorman, with whom he spent 64 years until her death in 2010. Conrad and Ruth lived in Portland until 1963 when he built their new home in Westbrook. He worked for his uncle at Paine Heating, then for his cousins building homes and installing foundations. In 1973 he started working for Donalco where he worked until he retired. Conrad was a long time active member of First Baptist Church in Portland. He was a trustee, deacon, Sunday School teacher and camp director. He maintained a large vegetable garden every summer and shared with family and neighbors. He also used his skills as carpenter, electrician and plumber to help neighbors with home improvements. Conrad was predeceased by his parents; his wife; his sisters Beverly and Thilda; and his brother David. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila and her husband Clint; grandchildren Brian (Ruthie) Glen (Lisa), and Julie; and great grandchildren Noah, Abby, Maren, Nathan, Ben and Kate. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy, sister-in-law Jean, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The funeral service will be held at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland ME on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at 2:00 pm. Private interment will be at Flanders Cemetery in Buxton.
