"Page Pioneer" George Greer, 69, his brother, Charles DeFoix Greer (who also died at age 69), and his parents, Fred DeFoix "DeFoix" Greer and Essie Louise (Fowler) Greer, helped to birth "America's Last Frontier" -- Page, Arizona.

His father, DeFoix Greer, was the manager of the MCS Trailer Park--"The Largest Trailer Park in the World" at one time--in Page from at least 1957 to 1959. During the summer of the BIG MCS STRIKE in 1959, Fred was the Foreman on a large ranch near Parker, AZ, and George hitchhiked to the farm, receiving multiple rides, once a week, from former PHS Classmate, Roy Herschel Eaves '59, who was working for the Department of Agriculture at that time. The cost of water caused the ranch to fail, and the house there has been torn down. Later on, when Roy was working on the Highway Patrol Staff in Phoenix, AZ, he was offered a 10% increase if he would relocate to a remote area. The Superior Court approved Roy as the new Judge of Salome, AZ, during the first interview, but the County Supervisor wanted the job for Roy's employee, so the officer who had worked for Roy was approved during the second interview. Roy had retired, so he went on to work for LHC for ten years as their investigator and is now in his second retirement.

George and Charles graduated together in the first 8th Grade Graduating Class of 1962, along with the first and only high school graduate, Miss Donna Lee Taylor, in May 1958, Page, Arizona.

George received his Social Security Number in Arizona that same year--1958.

George and Charles were Freshmen together the 1958-1959 school year at Page High School, where George was a member of the Lettermen's Club and is known to have played his guitar on the sports bus. However, they moved to Salome, AZ before the end of that school year and finished their Freshman and Sophomore years at Salome High School from 1959 to 1960.

John Wesley Walden, PHS '63, remembered the 1957-1958 school year in Page when he was in 7th grade and George and Charles were in 8th grade, as well as 8th grade when they were 9th grade Freshmen. John, like George, also played guitar and became a musician and recording artist later in life. He had me looking for George W. Greer for many years--told me that George had an older brother, and that George's father managed the MCS Trailer Park. The sad thing is, I told Johnny about all the photos of George in our Sage & Sand 1959 yearbook, trying to identify him, but there was no name attached to the photos, and I didn't think to show Johnny the photos of our "Mystery Guitar Player" -- Johnny would have been the one person who could have identified George right away. I even asked Johnny if George's photo on the bus with his guitar might be Johnny, himself....and Johnny thought it might be him (without being able to see the photo), because he was the only one I knew who played guitar and was in Page those first two school years.
