Sydney Shirley Larson

Sydney Shirley Larson, 80, of Deer Park, died of natural causes at her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, June 6, 2009.

She came into this world May 20, 1929, in New Home, a small farming community in West Texas, the second child of Sydney and Jessie Wells DePriest. The DePriest family moved to Pasadena in 1939. She attended Galena Park High School and Pasadena High School and played the clarinet in the school band. After graduation from Pasadena High School in 1947 she attended Hermann School of Nursing receiving an RN degree in 1949. She practiced nursing for 45 years, the last 31 as a school nurse in Pasadena.

She married the love of her life, Jimmy, in 1950. Jimmy and Shirley brought three children into the world, Jim, Ronny and Jayne. Ronny was killed tragically in 1959 at the age of 8. The Larsons moved to Deer Park in 1973 where they would spend the rest of their lives.

Shirley was a great success in life as a friend, mentor, teacher and confidante to many. She touched the lives of thousands of children as a school nurse, a Sunday school teacher at First Methodist Church in Pasadena and a Cub Scout leader. Her generosity was unsurpassed. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a Daughter of the American Republic. Her many avocations were art, fashion design, floral design and gourmet cooking. She hosted great parties. In three words she could be described as courageous, loving and joyful.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Susan Larson of Deer Park; daughter Deborah Jayne Larson and partner Kelly Forester of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Dixie Lee Russell, Jennifer Robyn Brito, Christopher Morgan Larson and Alayna Jian Larson; great-grandchildren, Matthew Lee Russell, Alexis Leeann Russell and Alyssa Tyler Brito; her little brother, James Lorenzo DePriest; nieces, Simone Schrott and husband Richard and Belinda Carlton and husband Dean. She is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband James L. Larson, Sr., her son Ronald Craig Larson, her grandson James L. Larson III (Tres), parents Sydney DePriest and Jessie Wells DePriest, and her big sister Alyene Gilzow.

A memorial service celebrating Sydney's extraordinary life will be held for family and friends at the home of her daughter at 2509 Cascade Drive, Austin, Texas on Sunday, June 14, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
