Jean was born September 24, 1929, to Robert and Edna (Suydam) Mathews at home near Yates City. She married Franklin "Tip" Bowers on December 10, 1949. He survives.
She is also survived by one son, Jim (Mel) Bowers of Hoopeston, IL; one grandson, Kevin (Lyndi) Bowers of Bartlett, IL; one granddaughter, Megan (Rob) Butterfield of Deer Park, IL; and seven great-grandchildren, Keaton, Olivia, Noah, Jude, and Henry Bowers, and Ethan and Zoe Butterfield.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; three borthers, Vernon "Speck" Mathews, Robert Mathews Jr., and James Mathews; and step-mother, Dorothy Mathews.
She graduated from Yates City High School in 1947. Jean loved her family and always enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For many years, Jean enjoyed being a farmer's wife. She later worked at the Fair Store in Elmwood. She enjoyed many years as the secretary for Yates City Order of the Eastern Stars.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Elmwood, where visitation will be held one hour prior from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Yates City Cemetery.
