US Diplomat. The son of Presidential Cabinet Secretary Hamilton Fish I, and grandson of Revolutionary War Colonel Nicholas Fish, he received bachelor's and master's degrees from Columbia University and a law degree from Harvard University. He entered the United States diplomatic service in 1871, serving as Assistant Secretary of the United States Mission in Germany. He became Secretary in 1874 and frequently served as Charge d'Affaires in the absence of a Minister. In 1877 he became Secretary of the United States Mission in Switzerland, again serving as Charge d'Affaires in the absence of a credentialed Minister. In 1882 he was appointed Minister to Belgium, serving until 1887. He then became a banker with the Harriman Brothers firm, of which his brother Stuyvesant Fish was President. Nicholas Fish died from injuries he sustained in a fight that began while he was drinking at an Eighth Avenue saloon. His brother Hamilton Fish II served in Congress, as did his nephew Hamilton Fish III and grand-nephew Hamilton Fish IV.
