Lee David Groat Sr., 81, of Brownsville, Texas, and formerly of Meredosia, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas.

He was born March 1, 1928, in Springfield, the son of Eugene and Eliza Powers Groat. He married Doris Zimmerman on June 7, 1946, and she survives.

He is also survived by one son, Lee D. (Fran) Groat Jr. of Carson City, Nev.; one sister, Adeline Mansfield of Springfield; and one brother, Jerry (Karen) Groat of Rochester. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Esther Fry, Ida Mae Mackuck, Ima Jean Sloan, Peggy Fawcett and Audrey Usher; and one brother, Richard Groat.

Mr. and Mrs. Groat owned and operated Groat Masonry and Groat Stone Company, retiring in 1974. They then founded Green Pastures Christian Retreat Center near Meredosia, retiring from there in 2002. He was a member of Church of the New Song.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
