Wretha Elizabeth (Stevens) Durst

On Friday, April 13, 2007, surrounded by the family who adored her, Wretha Durst flew on the wings of angels up to Heaven. Wretha was born on Feb. 25, 1922, on a farm in Hartford, Kan. to Curtis Stevens and Mary (Waitley) Stevens. The family moved to Idaho in 1933 and farmed in Eagle. Wretha graduated from Eagle High School and married Harry H. Durst on Dec. 26, 1944. After her husband's death, in 1962, Wretha worked multiple jobs to support her children and instilled a work ethic in them that has been a defining quality of their characters and a part of their mother's legacy for which they are each grateful. She worked at St. Alphonsus Hospital for many years, where she was an aide in the maternity ward. Over the years, she showered her motherly love on hundreds of babies, both in her professional capacity and as a loving grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother. In retirement, she continued to care for children of local families. Her constant love and devotion to her family were the primary focus of her life. Wretha was "The Rock" of her large family and words cannot express the immeasurable effect she had on each of their individual lives. Wretha had a strong Christian faith and was a member of 2nd (Trinity) Presbyterian Church and also attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her five children, Sandra (Fred) Brinkerhoff, Barbara Broyles, John Durst, Jim (Susan) Durst and Helena (Joe) Newby. Wretha was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Ball of Kansas City, Mo., and Margaret Bravo, of Federal Way, Wash., and a brother, Stanley Stevens, of Eagle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, and an infant son, John Steven. Wretha received loving care and attention during the last two years of her life by the staff of Sunbridge Care Facility, in Meridian. Legacy Hospice nurses were instrumental in caring for her during the preparation for her final journey. The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation for all who cared for their beloved mother during this time. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in her name to the BSU Nursing Program, c/o BSU Foundation, 2225 West University Drive, Boise, Idaho 83703, Trinity Presbyterian Church, or Meals on Wheels.
