Octavio F. Alpizar
1928-2018
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend Octavio F. Alpizar passed away on May 2, 2018 in Melbourne, FL. Octavio was born in Havana, Cuba on December 9, 1928. He moved to the United States in 1948 and married the love of his life Angela Cavanzon Alpizar in Key West, FL on June 10, 1950. They were happily married until Angela's passing on March 11, 2016. Octavio enjoyed a full life in Cayo Hueso before moving to Melbourne with his wife in 2014.
Octavio is survived by his son Octavio John Alpizar (graduate of Mary Immaculate High School class of 1971, Bethany College class of 1975 and Capital University School of Law class of 1978) and his wife Janna Alpizar; his four (4) grandchildren and their spouses: David M. Alpizar and his wife Rebecca of Melbourne, FL, Jamie Gardinier and her husband Tom of Union, WV, Scott D. Alpizar and his wife Jaime of Melbourne, FL and Brian C. Alpizar and his wife Anna of Nashville, TN, along with seven (7) great grandchildren: Summer, Taylor, Peyton, Bryce, Hailey, Benson and Walt. Octavio is also survived by his sister-in-law Caridad Garcia of Key West, FL, a beloved cousin Eulalia Shindle of Key West, FL and an uncle by marriage Juan Collazo of Key West. He was preceded in death by his father Rauol Alpizar Poyo, his mother Maria, stepmother Anna Rosa Alpizar and brother Francisco Alpizar.
Octavio was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who showed his family his zest for life and his ambitious spirit. His favorite story was about arriving in the United States in 1948 from Cuba with only .13 cents in his pocket and the fact that he never missed a day of work since coming to the United States in search of a brighter future for him and his family. He had fond memories of working at the Columbia Laundry, Key West Hand Print Fabrics and The City Electric System from where he retired after years of dedicated service to the place he always called home, Key West. Until his final days he was proud of the accomplishments of his son and grandchildren and was full of joy to see his great grandchildren that he adored. His smile would light up each time our two French Bulldogs, Bourbon and Beignet, would come to visit him at his apartment at the Fountains of Melbourne where he spent the last four years of his life. He also loved sugar and sweets and never declined a bite of dessert.
There will be an open Visitation at Dean Lopez Funeral Home in Key West, Florida on Friday, May 11, 2018 from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM, followed by a Mass at The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church starting at 1:00 PM. After the Mass he will be laid to rest at the family plot at the Key West Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to VITAS Healthcare (which provided hospice services for Octavio) or The American Diabetes Association.
