Always sad to see a soldier buried under a marker for the wrong unit. This man first served in Company E, 16th Arkansas Infantry Regiment until after the battle of Pea Ridge. On 24 Mar 1862 he was left behind on the march, sick, and the regiment continued on to Mississippi. He later (17 Mar 1863) enlisted in Company A, 17th (Harrell's) Arkansas Cavalry Battalion. It is under this designation that his widow, Leann Margaret See, applied for and received a Confederate Pension from the state of Arkansas (#3337), in 1901. How he came to be buried under the notation "3rd Arkansas Cavalry" is a mystery to me. Obviously there are no Compiled Service Records for this man in either the Confederate or Union 3rd Arkansas Cavalry Regiments. The enlistment record for his time in the cavalry is under "Mack See" which is, I believe, a mis-transcription of "Wash See" by the War Department clerks in the early part of the last century.

Son of John See and Evalina Eglantine Lorrance.

Husband of Leann M. See
