Avery Verne Bates, 87, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at his home in Amsterdam.

Avery was born June 4, 1911, to Burch and Floyd (Scollard) Bates on the Bates Ranch west of Amsterdam. The ranch was homesteaded by one of Avery's great uncles. His parents moved there from Iowa in 1909.

Bates followed in his father's footsteps, farming and ranching for more than 50 years before retiring. In 1939 Avery married Grace Kamp, and they lived in their Amsterdam home for the next 59 years. Avery enjoyed his family, often telling friends "my three sons all live within seven miles."

He is survived by his wife, Grace of Amsterdam; sons, Ronald (Sherry) on the original Bates' place, Virgil (Louise) of Anceney, and Gary on the Art Ranch, one mile west of the home place; also by six grandchildren: Deborah (Monty) Myhre, Renae Reller, Daniel Verne (Amber) Bates, Deborah (Ron) Finkbeiner, Daniel Nolan Bates, and Tamara Bates; and by eight great-grandchildren: Justin, Valerie, Tyler and Arica Myhre; Christine, Melissa and Natasha Finkbeiner; and Jeremy Reller. He like to carry pictures of his grandchildren and would proudly show them at every opportunity.

He also enjoyed his numerous nephews, nieces, in-laws, friends and neighbors.

Avery attended Grace Bible church faithfully for more than 50 years. He served on the Amsterdam School Board for 17 years and the Manhattan School Board for six years. He also served on the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee (ASCS) for nine years and was a charter member of the Amsterdam Sewer District Board.

Avery and Grace like to travel, visiting all but two of the 50 states. They toured Australia and New Zealand in 1977 and six countries in Europe in 1978. On a trip to Canada in 1981, Avery suffered a cardiac arrest and was hospitalized for the first time in his life. After this setback he was somewhat limited. Writing, spelling and recognizing people were sometimes a struggle, but the ability to read, which he enjoyed, and the talent of cracking a witty remark, which he enjoyed even more, did return to him.

Preceding Avery in death were his parents; a son at birth in 1943; his brother, Leo; and his sisters, Alberda Hallberg and Rubye Cooper.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel, with Pastor Bryan Hughes of Grace Bible Church in charge of the service. Pallbearers will be Daniel V. Bates, Daniel N. Bates, Monty Myhre, Ronald Finkbeiner, Stewart Cooper and Dan Kamp. Interment will be in Meadowview Cemetery.

Memorials in Avery's name may be made to the Gallatin County Historical Society, Bozeman; or to a charity of your choice.
