Mary Emma Brookman Petty Winston, 92, of Bremo Bluff, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2018 at The Heritage Inn of Charlottesville.

She was born on November 16, 1925, in Fluvanna County, to the late Millard Miley and Leotie (Glass) Brookman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Conley Barker "Junior" Petty, Jr.; two sons, Hunter Thomas "Tom" Petty, Sr. and Michael Wayne Petty; a grandson, Hunter Thomas "Tom" Petty, Jr.; four brothers, Andrew, Ammit, Lawrence, and Benjamin Brookman; and five sisters, Irene Turner, Amy Lee Dunkum, Virgie Snow, Minnie Wyant, and Inez Halterman.

Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Throughout her life she served as a fire tower watch person, a cook, a farmer, and a homemaker. Mary had another special family--Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church where she has served the Lord in many capacities since she was a child. She enjoyed country music, sewing, playing canasta, her birds and flowers, square dancing and cooking. Collinswood Community Center loved her coconut cakes.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel Leake Winston of Bremo Bluff; her daughter, Kay Petty Noble Carter of Arvonia; three grandchildren, Michael Brandon Noble (Elita) of Colonial Heights, Patrick Edwin Noble of Arvonia, and Wendy Petty Luckado (Roger) of Esmont; great-grandchildren; Taylor and Hunter Petty (Angie) and Wayne and Jesse Luckado; step-children, Raymond Winston (Kim) and Julia Smith; step-grandchildren; Trenton Winston and Mazie Smith Netherwood; and a number of loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Pastors Rachel Miller Chen and Greg Miller will guide a Celebration of Mary’s Life on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church, 1807 Rolling Road South, Scottsville, VA. 24590 in Fluvanna County. Interment will be in the church cemetery followed by a reception.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Saturday evening, May 5, 2018 at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, 650 Valley St., Scottsville, VA. 24590.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer's Association of Central and Western Virginia, 355 Rio Road West, Suite 102, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Mary’s wish was “Give Me My Flowers Before I Die.”
